Acupuncture
TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) philosophy aims to harmonize the body’s natural balance to treat
both the cause and the manifestations (ie pain or symptoms) of disease
to promote and maintain health.
Treating the root cause of conditions offers a truly holistic
approach, and because of this the results are effective and long
lasting. Acupuncture offers:-
- safe holistic
treatment - acupuncture has no harmful side effects
- effective for both acute & chronic conditions
- acupuncture has been shown to significantly improve chronic painful conditions
- acupuncture is now being used in many NHS pain clinics
- Safe and appropriate for adults and children (with parental consent)
- effective treatment for many conditions (see Conditions Treated) or to support your health through critical illness
- Recent N.I.C.E Guidelines recommend the use of acupuncture to treat back pain
Using fine sterile needles inserted at specific locations around the body (acupuncture points), the needles connect and tap into a complex system of meridians/channels, which in turn communicate with a particular organ system within the body. Dysfunction or blockages of these meridians creates an imbalance to the ‘Qi’ energy within this system causing disease. Inserting needles unblocks the channels to restore balance, and allows the free flow of Qi energy.
Used in Western culture for many years and now gaining recognition amongst the biomedical community, for significantly
improving chronic pain issues, acupuncture has been
introduced by the NHS, for use in Pain Clinics, to treat patients
with conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, back
(sciatic), neck (cervical spondylosis) and shoulder problems. However,
acupuncture is also very effective for many more conditions, see Conditions Treated for more information.
Chinese Herbal Formulary
is the foundation of the Chinese medical system and has a successful
3,000 year history. The materia medica used are dried plant parts ie:-
- flower heads
- seeds
- roots
- bark and leaves
The
Herbal recipe is infused into a decoction, a tea-like beverage.
Tea-pills, capsules or powders are also available but are less powerful
than the dried herbs. Herbs used in my practice are tested for
contaminants and heavy metals at source, and are subjected to strict
guidelines during production and packaging so you can be assured of
receiving quality medicines.
Chinese Herbs and acupuncture compliment each other, delivering a truly holistic treatment, re-balancing the body’s unique energy systems.
Cupping Therapy
Cupping, an ancient eastern therapeutic art, traditionally used by applying heated bamboo cups to the skin, to create a vacuum over the
local area. Today smooth glass cups are applied using a flame to create the vacuum. The purpose to this technique is to draw blood
and toxins out of the muscles to the skin's surface where it can be more
easily dispersed by the body.
Useful and effective for treating coughs and colds and muscular pain.
Moxibustion
Moxa is a dried herb rolled into a cigar shape, ingnited and left to smoulder, it is held over treatment specific points to inject heat into the point and the meridian system for a therapeutic effect. Loose Moxa can also be applied to the top of needles and lit, carrying heat into muscles to relieve stagnation from cold and damp.
- This technique is specifically good for chronic muscular pain.
